भगवान शिव ने हिमालय की एक गुफा को चुना, जो अमरत्व की कथा के रहस्य के लिए उपयुक्त थी। इस गुफा की गहराई में प्रवेश करते ही भगवान शिव ने पार्वती को अमरत्व की कथा सुनानी शुरू की। गुफा की सुरक्षा के लिए भगवान शिव ने सबसे पहले अपनी नंदी बाघ को एक स्थान पर छोड़ा, उसके बाद उन्होंने अपने नगा (सांपों) को गुफा के बाहर छोड़ा | उन्होंने एक एक करके अपनी सभी वस्तुओं को गुफा के बाहर छोड़ दिया, जैसे त्रिशूल, डमरू, और यहां तक कि अपनी सबसे प्रिय बाघ की खाल भी और पार्वती को गुफा में लेकर गए।

अमरनाथ का श्वेत शिवलिंग

भगवान शिव ने अमरनाथ की गुफा में अमरत्व की कथा सुनाते हुए बताया कि हर जीव का जन्म और मृत्यु निश्चित है, परंतु एक सच्चे भक्त की भक्ति और प्रेम अमर होता है। शिव की कथा सुनाने के बाद, जब उन्होंने गुफा की ओर देखा तो देखा कि वहाँ एक दिव्य श्वेत शिवलिंग प्रकट हो चुका था। यह शिवलिंग बर्फ से निर्मित था और उसकी चमक अद्भुत थी। भगवान शिव ने पार्वती को इसे देखकर कहा कि यह शिवलिंग उनके अमरत्व का प्रतीक है। यही शिवलिंग आज भी अमरनाथ की गुफा में पूजनीय है और भक्तों की श्रद्धा का केंद्र है।
